Game Modes and Basics - Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Game Modes

CS:GO caters for a large variety of game modes depending on the player's taste and seriousness. These game modes are:

Competitive

The competitive game mode is CS:GO's main platform. The competitive game mode assigns each player a rank based on their relative performance compared to other players - allowing individual players to determine their skill level. These ranks are shown below.

Competitive games are tailored to the player's preferences - before the game starts, players are allowed to choose their favoured maps. After choosing preferred maps, players enter match making where they are matched with 9 other players of similar skill cap (total 10 of players in each game). Of these 10 players, they will be split evenly into 5 a side. Nonetheless, players are entitled to play each competitive game with up to 5 friends, whereby the match making takes the average skill level all the players.

Fundamental Gameplay

Once inside the competitive match, the 10 players are split into teams of 5. One team plays as Terrorists side (yellow dots), the other team plays as Counter Terrorists side (blue dots). Each competitive game consists of 30 rounds in the total and an half time after round 15, where the teams swap sides. After each round, each team is given money depending the result of the previous round - winning team receives more money than the losing team  in addition to the money received for each kill. This money can be used to buy better weapons, armour, grenades, etc., with the maximum amount of money obtainable being 16,000.

The main objective of the terrorist side is to:
  • Plant the bomb on either of the two bombsites labelled A and B. Once the bomb is planted, the terrorist side has to protect and stop the bomb from being defused by the counter terrorists. The bomb explodes after 35 seconds of being planted. If the bomb successfully explodes then the terrorist side wins the round.
  • Eliminate all counter terrorists, in doing so, terrorists win the round.

The main objective of the counter terrorist side is to:
  • Hold each site and prevent the terrorists from planting the bomb. If the bomb is planted, the counter terrorists try to defuse the bomb without getting killed and before the bomb explodes. It takes 10 seconds to defuse the bomb and with a defuse kit (bought in game) it takes 5 seconds. If the bomb is successfully defused or prevented from being planted within the 2 minute round timer, counter terrorist side wins the round.
  • Eliminate all terrorists, in doing so, counter terrorists win the round.

Casual

The casual game mode is exactly the same as Competitive in terms of it's fundamental gameplay however with the exceptions of 10 players per team (20 players in total), a maximum money cap of 10,000 and players starting with armour.

As the name suggests, the casual game mode is a more relaxed gameplay experience as the casual games do not affect you're rank, allowing mistakes to be freely made. The casual game mode is offered for new players, practicing players or players who want to unwind. Each casual game, the player is not matched with players of similar skill cap but matched with players with similar pings (default maximum ping of 150).

Deathmatch

The deathmatch game mode is significantly different in terms of gameplay. Despite still having a terrorist and counter terrorist side, there is no default spawn location for each side - players are scattered randomly across the map. After dying, players respawn immediately and these respawns are infinite. Also, players start with armour and have a choice of any weapon without cost. Furthermore, there is no real primary objective such as defusing or planting the bomb. Instead, players aim to eliminate all enemies on the opposing team. After 10 minutes elapses, the round is over and the top 3 players with the most points are displayed . In addition, death matches don't affect players' rank and the match making process is similar to the one of the casual game mode.

Other (Custom)

These game modes are created by the community. There are thousands of maps created by the counter-strike community and each map serving a unique purpose. There are modes where players can 1v1 other players to access their individual abilities or there are modes used specifically to practice aim.
